History
The Dornblueth & Sohn story starts in 1959, a gloomy November evening in Chemnitz, then known as Karl-Marx-Stadt. A young watchmaker named Dieter Dornblueth, fueled by passion, sketched his first ever movement design on a simple napkin in his furnished room. This dream of creating his own caliber would stay with him for decades.
Like father, like son
Fast forward to 1999, and Dieter's son Dirk, now a master watchmaker himself, decided to surprise his father on his 60th birthday. Dirk presented Dieter with a stainless steel wristwatch he'd meticulously crafted, its movement based on the legendary Glashutte caliber 60.3. This thoughtful gift sparked a heartwarming revelation. Dieter, overcome with joy, confessed his long-forgotten plans for his own movement, a dream he'd kept hidden for 40 years.
That very night, fueled by renewed excitement, father and son grabbed a paper napkin and began sketching again. This time, they were collaborating, bringing Dieter's vision from 1959 back to life. The napkin sketch became the foundation for what would eventually become the cornerstone of Dornblueth & Sohn – their own in-house movement.
Family business
In 1999, with a shared passion and a blueprint for the future, Dieter and Dirk officially established D. Dornblüth & Sohn. Three years later, in 2002, their tireless dedication paid off. They unveiled their first production model – a watch that embodied not just their technical expertise, but also the emotional journey that led them there. This first model, inspired by Dieter's initial sketches, was a testament to the enduring power of dreams and the joy of collaboration.
Today, Dornblueth & Sohn continues to thrive as a family-run business. They remain committed to their core values: exceptional craftsmanship, meticulous attention to detail, and a dedication to timeless design. Each Dornblueth watch is a tangible reminder of the company's rich history, a story that began with a single napkin sketch and a shared passion for watchmaking.
